Thompson works hard to fit both feet in mouth

It seems that despite being a “Vol” fan all of his life, Fred Thompson hasn’t paid much attention to the SEC in a few years.  That can only be the reason why Thompson would try to insult large voting blocs in two important primary state’s; in two sentences no less.

Maybe Fred Thompson should have punted. Instead, the Republican presidential hopeful from Tennessee might have sacked his chances with Gamecock fans by targeting coach Steve Spurrier.

Thompson, the former U.S. senator from Tennessee who is seeking the 2008 GOP presidential nomination, was in Gainesville, Fla., on Saturday, campaigning at the Florida-Tennessee football game. According to Politico.com, Thompson was “besieged” by fans of both schools to say for whom he was rooting.

“I’m too old to change now,” Thompson said. “I’ve been a Vol all my life. But I’ll tell you what, we can both do our best to beat the Ol’ Ball Coach.”

S.C. Rep. Michael Thompson, R-Anderson, is a major Fred Thompson supporter (although the two are not related) and a major Gamecock fan. Michael Thompson was displeased to hear his candidate’s comments.

“We’re going to have a little talk about that,” Thompson said. “That’s all right. He’ll be saying that after the Ol’ Ball Coach rings up about half-a-hundred on him.”
