Shaking the money tree

The Presidential campaigns are beginning to spin their expectations as they release their fundraising totals and there are a couple of story lines worth noting.  You can begin to understand what to expect by how each campaign tries to lower expectations or leak impressive stats.  Here are the story lines worth noting:

  • Obama is crushing all candidates in totals for Q2.  with a reported 32 million coming in he will surely out pace all other candidates regardless of Party.  He is raising it in bundles AND in small, Howard Dean type, Internet contributions. Barring a Dean-esque meltdown,  he is now positioned to challenge the Clinton establishment machine for the nomination.
  • Just how far behind will Hillary come in?
  • Can John Edwards, who will report around 9 million raised, stay viable in the race?  Former staffers from Edward’s 2004 try are quietly predicting to The Shot that there is serious trouble in store for the campaign.

Here is a link that looks at the situation?

  • The Giuliani campaign is now leaking high expectations that they will lead the Republican field with roughly 16 million raised.
  • He will best, though probably not by much, the Romney machine for this quarter.  Expectations are that Romney will seed the campaign with a personal contribution, but that the totals without personal funds will be in the low teens.  The campaign says it has been focused the last few months on grassroots activity and public appearances in early Primary states and not as much on “dialin’ for dollars.”

Read about it here.

  • Finally, the word is that McCain continues to have a very bad Q2, from bad press to a poor showing in fundraising.  Expectations are that he will struggle to reach his poor Q1 showing.  In addition, the McCain Campaign is in round two of staff firings all across the country, further evidence that the campaign is flagging.  All of this has led to the continued speculation that he will not stay in the race much longer.

Here is the story on McCain’s woes.
