Actually, I've heard through the grapevine that some General Assembly Republicans would be open to switching parties, or at least breaking away from the GOP caucus, if the Dems would step forward and offer some sort of deal.

But, true to their m.o., the Dems continue to do nothing.

I'm a liberal and a democrat and I agree in principal with Thomas, this states republican party has lost it's identity due to local infighting between the factions. For some reason the party is shifting ever further 'right' as influence from the Upstate increases over the midlands and the coast. That is driving many more democrats to come out of the wood work and moderate traditional conservatives (who are now viewed as liberals from the power brokers in Greenville) to jump ship and form coalitions with the Dems in an effort to ebb the tide of the new Radical Republicans of the upstate. This is an issue that as a party you'll have to stand up to... Do you want to be a party of the people for smaller government and core but broad traditional values or are you going to become fascists and theocrats crowning Bob Jones High Priest, Prophet, and King? Perfect example of this - a person such as Buddy Witherspoon is running against a sound traditionally conservative person such as Lindsey Graham. Even as a liberal I'm shocked at what amounts simply to cannibalism...

The great and powerful of the GOP (Katon Dawson, Mark Sanford, etc) have done a fine job turning us into a big government, big spending party.

The Dems are going to become competitive again, and they should. We have lost our way and the people know it.

Perhaps it is what we need. We needed a Carter to get a Reagan. Maybe we need a butt kicking so that we can then rebuild our party again on conservative principles.
