Sanford on MSNBC (UPDATED)

What is Mark Sanford doing right now talking about Iraq on MSNBC?  Perhaps he should stick to more important issues, like calling your fellow Republicans silly names and carrying pigs around the Statehouse.

(UPDATE) - Oh wait, topic has turned to Real ID.  Sounds a little less silly now.

(UPDATE 2) - Joe just said “he fights the law and wins.”  Oh really…he wins, huh?  If by wins you mean - picks fights with the legislature and always loses and works to recruit candidates against big dogs like Leatherman, Harrell, Peeler, Cooper but can’t get the job done.  Yeah, he fights the law and wins.

It’s a brilliant strategy, really. When he loses, he wins. When he wins, he wins. It’s all gravy!

Testimony: Governor Mark Sanford made REPEATED efforts to sell to a FAVORED DEVELOPER

SANFORD PUSHED HARD for a FAVORED DEVELOPER

Both of Chaffin/Light offers for Port Royal Port were too far below the appraised value of the land.

Bill Stern of the Ports Authority said he had “three, four or five discussions with the governor” about the sale. “Stern’s description of Sanford’s advocacy goes beyond the governor’s description of his efforts”.

“(Sanford) pushed hard for me to try to make a deal with him,” said Stern, who was chairman of the Ports Authority at the time”…

“Stern said one of his conversations with the governor lasted 45 minutes and left him “irritated”….

    Sen. Jake Knotts said:
…“But I don’t think the governor had a right to try to direct a contract to a friend or campaign contributor.”

Another attempt to HELP/SELL to Chaffin/Light:
The Ports Authority reached a $26 million deal in November with ANOTHER firm, Port Royal Harbour LLC. But Sanford expressed concerns about the personal reputation of one of the company’s leaders…

“Bill Stern said he and Sanford have clashed frequently on port issues”…

Bottomline, GOVERNOR SANFORD PUSHED HARD for a FAVORED DEVELOPER to the very end.

The 12-member Savannah River Maritime Commission was charged by the state legislature to represent South Carolina in matters…

Mike McShane, director of the Department of Natural Resources, said he thinks ambiguity was by design.

“It gives broad powers to be figured out by the commission,” McShane said.

Dean Moss also is general manager of the Beaufort-Jasper Water and Sewer Authority and a member of the Savannah River Committee said “the group has a lot of authority to get the state committed to something without having to check in with someone”.

Contracts on the table for sale of Port Royal railroad

Two agencies this week will get a look at a contract that would see the shuttered Port Royal Railroad turned over to a local water utility.

Service along the 25-mile stretch of rail line that runs from Port Royal to Yemassee ended in 2003, and both the S.C. State Ports Authority and the Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer Authority are considering a deal to turn the line over to the utility.

The Ports Authority’s board of directors will look at the contract Wednesday, and the utility’s board will see it Thursday. Control of the rail line has been up in the air since service stopped five years ago.

Ideas that would turn the line into tourist or recreational attraction have been batted around, and the utility has said it would use the rail’s right of way to run its lines.

Dean Moss, executive director of the water utility, said Monday that he doesn’t expect the contract will be approved until May.

“There’s still a little bit of work to do on the contract,” he said, “but I wanted the board to have the ability to look at it and discuss it.”

Moss said the big issue — the price — has been agreed upon, though it won’t be released until the contract is signed.

Byron Miller, spokesman for the Ports Authority, wouldn’t comment on the contract other than to say it’s a deal with the utility.

Once the deal is completed, Moss said the utility would consider additional uses for the property.

“(The utility) plans to buy that right of way … for use as a pipeline right of way,” he said. “We assume that local governments or other citizen groups would want to make other uses of that right of way, and we will, at the appropriate time, be willing to sit down and discuss all of those things.”

A recent decision by the Surface Transportation Board cleared the way for the rail line’s sale.

The board in February decided that the line had not been abandoned, which means its right of way shouldn’t revert to the previous landowners.

Landowners with property near the line filed a petition in December 2006 asking that the panel declare the railroad abandoned.

Officers said during the investigation they identified Jesus Ernesto Rodriguez-Netro as the source of the marijuana

On April 17, agents searched Rodriguez-Netro’s house at 100 Cambridge Road in Clemson. Agents said they found about 40 pounds of marijuana, weapons, scales, baggies, records, and other items used in drug trafficking.

Those charged with trafficking marijuana in connection with the raid include: Jesus Ernesto Rodriguez-Netro, 25; Christina Wilcox Rodriguez-Netro, 28; and 21-year-old Carlos Humberto Rodriguez-Torres. They each face up to 10 years in prison and $10,000 fines if convicted.

William Wesley Wheeler, 20, was charged with trafficking marijuana as a second offense and possession of cocaine. He faces up to 23 years in prison and $22,500 in fines if convicted.

Ricardo Bernard Lane, 21, was charged with possession of marijuana. He faces up to 30 days in prison and up to a $200 fine if convicted. He was released on bond. Bond was denied for all the other suspects.
