Rudy’s Disappoints on Immigration
Rudy Giuliani hasn’t spent that much time here in South Carolina over the last few months, so we really haven’t spent that much time talking about him. But he certainly made his presence felt yesterday with a tour through the state touting his plan for illegal immigration. As you well know, we were supportive of Sen DeMint though the recent unpleasantness in the Senate over the immigration reform bill, and we were heartened to hear Rudy tell a crowd in Aiken that ”We can end illegal immigration. I promise you, we can end illegal immigration.” Since Hizzonor isn’t exactly your prototypical GOP candidate with his admittedly less-than-conservative views on a number of social issues, we were mildly surprised to hear him say what he said.
That is, until we saw this:
Rudy said, “‘Some of the hardest-working and most productive people in this city are undocumented aliens,’ Giuliani said at the time. ‘If you come here and you work hard and you happen to be in an undocumented status, you’re one of the people who we want in this city. You’re somebody that we want to protect, and we want you to get out from under what is often a life of being like a fugitive, which is really unfair.’” (h/t – Allahpundit)
Now, you know how we felt about the Senate immigration bill which would have granted amnesty to illegals that are already here, but to us, it sounds like Rudy is actually INVITING illegal immigrants to NYC! “You’re one of the people we want in this city”? Folks, it’s not like they’re advertising for a Realtors Convention – he’s telling illegal immigrants that if you come to New York City, we’ll protect you from the federal government!
We’re all for immigrants who “work hard” (legal ones), but the fact of the matter is that in Britain, they’ve got hard working immigrants (doctors, no less) that tried to blow up two nightclubs and an airport last month – just because you work hard doesn’t mean that you should have a mayor that shields you from the federal government.
Honestly, we’re just a little disappointed that Rudy, who did so much on 9/11, could be so naive that he would INVITE undocumented, illegal aliens into the USA’s largest city and offer them protection simply based on whether they’re “hard working” or not.
