McCain has only $2 Million on hand, firing more SC staffers (UPDATE)

FIRINGS IN S.C. WILL OCCUR

Today the McCain Campaign announced that they only raised a disappointing $11.2 million for this year’s second quarter. What is more troubling is that they spent $14.4 million leaving the campaign with $2 million cash-on-hand.

Liz Sidoti from the AP is also reporting that “more than 50 staffers, and perhaps as many as 80 to 100, were being let go, and senior aides will be subject to pay cuts as the Arizona senator bows to six months of sub-par fundraising, according to officials with knowledge of the details of the shake up.”

Some of these lay-offs will take place here in South Carolina. Jonathan Martin from the politico is reporting “a senior McCain adviser tells me that every department in the campaign will be trimmed backed, including some limited cuts in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.” Now the only question remains who down at McCain’s S.C. Headquarters’ goes?

I think overall the McCain Campaign now has no chance of capturing the nomination. I’ve said from the beginning of this year that any campaign wanting to be on the Republican ticket will have to raise at least $100 million. Twenty-three states will be holding primaries on February 5, 2008, and any campaign that wants a shot at winning to nomination will have to put a great deal of money in at least some of those states.

(UPDATE) From Jonathan Martin at The Politico:

While McCain has previously terminated a handful of South Carolina operatives, I’m told by sources there that his senior leadership in the state — consultant Richard Quinn and director Trey Walker — remain on board.   Some of the newer South Carolina hires, though, will be departing and others will take paycuts or volunteer their services for a time.
