The Brownback Hypocrisy

This week the center of the GOP political world is Ames, Iowa, which plays host to the Iowa GOP’s annual straw poll. The Ames Straw Poll will bring an onslaught of candidates, news media, barbecue, speeches, entertainment to an estimated 40,000 Iowans who will cast ballots to declare which presidential candidate they plan to support in Iowa’s upcoming “First in the Nation” caucus.
Candidates spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to secure votes from Iowans through food, fun and festivities. They bring celebrities to their tents to help garner votes—and Saturday’s straw poll certainly has its’ own dignitaries.
Senator Sam Brownback is billing his session “an afternoon of prayer and celebration” and has announced that his party plans at the straw poll venue will feature:
-
Lou Engle, founder of “The Call”
-
Fr. Frank Pavone, Pro-Life Leader
-
Bobby Schindler, Brother of Terry Schiavo
-
Steve McEveety, Producer of the Passion of the Christ
-
Eduardo Verostegul, Mexican Actor
Norma McCorvey is “Jane Roe” of the Roe v. Wade case. Although there are many questions surrounding her role in the controversial case, she is the reason that abortion is legal in the United States. For 22 years she lived with her life partner, Connie Gonzales and on August 10, 1995, became a self-described “Pro-Life Activist” and recently petitioned the US Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade.
I raise Ms. McCorvey’s involvement in Mr. Brownback’s festivities for one reason— Sam Brownback has been viciously attacking Mitt Romney for changing his views on abortion from pro-choice to pro-life, but prominently features “Jane Roe” who also recently changed her views from pro-choice to pro-life. Sam Brownback can’t have it both ways. Those who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones, Senator.

brownback is trying too hard to appeal to the christian right, he is going to alienate himself from the party base. i am not a fan of brownback at all, but it seems to me those who dont have a platform or are unable to get there message out to the public tout on christian values to get support from someone. hunter is doing the same thing. the christian base is not going to win elections, you need to branch out. the christian base is a fight for the second tier hopefuls. in the end the christian right is going to support one of the top tier guys, they want to be behind a winner.

If you guys aren’t careful, Senator Brownback is going to take The Shot behind the barn and kill it with a dull axe, just like he’s going to do with the current tax system when he gets elected. I’m just saying, I’ve heard the guy keeps that axe with him at all times…

With how boring Sam Brownback always is, I would hope that’s not just a threat but a promise too, cause that’s what I want to do to myself everytime I hear him speak.

Alex–I know you are a young guy like me. Forget about the abortion issue! There are mosre important things to worry about as a twenty-somthing.

Agreed that there are so many important issues in this election, however, Senator Brownback just won’t shut-up about this one.
We get so many emails each day from this guy about this one issue. He truly is a one trick pony.

Its obvious the writer fears Brownback, for another candidate, so he “viciously attacks” him. To say its a “hypocrisy” to accept “Roe” as a supporter means its a hypocrisy for any Republican to vote for his man Romney. Stroman lives in the glass house he describes. Brownback’s comparison ads are not “vicious” at all but statements of fact - like that Romney did not support a Human Life Amendment (until last Sunday after the Brownback pub.) while Brownback always has, and Romney still supports embryonic stem cell research - which Brownback does not. And to say he is a one issue candidate is bizarre. How about printing his many other stances on the War on Terror and the political solution in Iraq, Social Security, reducing the size of government, Border Security etc…Brownback actually has plans while almost everyone else just says we have problems. I have yet to hear a Romney plan for any problem.
