BREAKING: WINGATE NOT PERMANENT APPOINTMENT

We have heard from numerous legislators that Ken Wingate is a “temporary Interim Treasurer” meaning he is not Sanford’s permanent appointment.

Sources tell us that Governor Sanford was in a hurry to appoint an immediate replacement because numerous state checks had to be signed today by an acting Treasurer.

In addition, in their press release the Governor’s Office noted “I can’t say enough about Ken’s willingness to do this here in the short term, and for his willingness to help us look for a longer term replacement critical to managing that office.”

Catch that - “willingness to help us look for a longer term replacement.”

We hear that Sanford will appoint another Interim Treasurer in the coming days until Ravenel steps down and the General Assembly elects a permanent replacement.

“meaning he is not Sanford’s permanent appointment.” If I am not mistaken Sandord will not be able to appoint a ‘permanent’ replacement - the person will have to be elected by the legislature.

    Q is out.

Anon - you are correct, but Sanford intends to find a different Interim Treasurer before the General Assembly votes on a permanent one. Wingate is not the permanent Interim Treasurer.

Does that make any sense? We are starting to confuse ourselves here.

    Anon,

    From the horse’s mouth:

Sanford’s office said Wingate “is the immediate answer to an immediate crisis,” according to press secretary Joel Sawyer. “We’re still working to make a determination whether we need a more permanent interim replacement and who that might be.”-The State 6/21/07
